Lingual Braces

    london dental specialists team

We are delighted to be able to offer Lingual Braces at London Dental Specialists. Many practices do not offer this type of treatment as lingual braces can be technically difficult to place.

We are fortunate that our highly skilled, educated and professional team can place lingual braces for you. If you are very conscious about your appearance and do not want any braces visible this is the treatment for you. Dr Ennis, our orthodontic specialist, will assess your teeth for suitability for this treatment. If, after discussion, you choose to go ahead, Dr Ennis will attach the orthodontic metal brackets to the inside, or tongue facing side of your teeth. You can imagine that this will usually take a little longer than attaching the brackets on to the front side of the teeth.

Once the brackets are in place, a wire will be fitted and your treatment will progress in just the same way as conventional orthodontic treatment. Our team will see you every 4-8 weeks for adjustment and review and just like conventional orthodontics your treatment time will be anything from 6-18 months depending on the degree of your mal-alignment. Unlike ceramic braces and Invisalign, which are virtually invisible, lingual braces really are invisible, nothing can be seen on the front of your teeth. If you are highly self conscious about braces this is the treatment for you.

Do lingual braces affect my speech?

All braces will affect your speech for a short period of time, 24-48 hours but lingual braces may cause more of a speech problem for longer. This is because the lingual brackets do take up some of the tongue space. Usually your tongue will adapt but it does take a little longer than conventional braces.

Is it easy to keep lingual braces clean?

Again, all braces need a lot of attention to brushing to keep them clean, food particles can accumulate under the wires and between the brackets. With lingual braces it can be quite difficult to keep clean and we would always advise that you allocate more time to cleaning lingual braces than conventional braces.

Who is eligible for Lingual Braces?

Anyone can have Lingual Braces, young or old, if they are particularly concerned with the appearance of braces on their teeth. We also have to assess the way your teeth fit together to ensure that your bite does not conflict with the positioning of brackets.

What are the advantages of LIngual Braces?

Lingual braces are an inconspicuous method of treatment they are a good alternative to traditional braces if you are self-conscious about your appearance changing. Lingual braces are more effective than other types of cosmetic braces such as ceramic braces and Invisalign, for changing the height of certain teeth, correcting rotations and closing spaces.
