03 Oct The Importance of Root Canal Treatment
The importance of root canal treatment, and why you mustn’t wait!
Root canal treatment (RCT) is one of the most common and complicated dental treatments carried out at our practice. Studies have shown that the experience and skill of the first dentist to carry out an RCT in a tooth will dictate it’s long-term prognosis. Root canal specialists are the only dentists with verifiable expertise in this crucial treatment. This is important because if not done correctly, you could either lose the tooth or, in rare cases, end up in hospital if infection spreads.
At London Dental Specialists, we offer a unique 12-month warranty on many of our root canal treatments. Please see our options here.
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment is an established dental procedure that aims to eliminate infections from individual teeth without removing them. During the procedure, the internal aspect (the root canal) of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to prevent further infection. If the tooth is not thoroughly cleaned and sealed by an expert, the tooth will get infected again, leading to pain, swelling and potential hospitalisation.
Why do people need root canal treatments?
There are a few reasons why people might need a root canal, including:
- Tooth decay: Tooth decay is the most common reason for needing a root canal treatment. Tooth decay occurs when you have sugary foods/snacks throughout the day. There are many things that do not taste sweet but have sugar. If the decay isn’t treated, it can eventually reach the pulp, leading to pain, infection, and tooth loss.
- Trauma: An injury (caused by an accidental blow) to the tooth can damage the nerve even if there is no visible damage to the tooth. This can happen if you have a fall or other accident that causes trauma to the mouth. The tooth can die gradually after a few years.

How much do root canals cost?
The cost of a root canal varies depending on the severity of the problem, the type of tooth involved, and other factors. Generally, root canals can cost anywhere from £500 to £1,500. At London Dental Specialists, they cost £900-£1200.
Why a specialist is better at root treating a tooth
A root canal specialist is a dentist who has undergone additional training to perform this procedure. They are skilled in dealing with the delicate tissue inside the tooth and have the experience necessary to ensure that the process is done correctly. This extra training and expertise mean that root canal specialists can provide better care and achieve better results faster and more accurately than general dentists.
