A dental filling replaces the part of a tooth that decay or a fracture has destroyed. It seals the tooth against further decay and restores its shape so you can bite on it normally.

An untreated cavity keeps growing. Once decay reaches the nerve the tooth needs root canal treatment or extraction rather than a filling, and infection can pass to the neighbouring tooth. We remove the decayed tissue and rebuild the tooth with a tooth-coloured composite resin, as part of the general and family dentistry in London we provide.
Before treating, we take a medical history and use x-rays where they are needed to see how deep the decay goes, keeping radiation exposure to a minimum. The examination tells Dr Sodeinde and the team whether a filling is enough or the tooth needs more.

Anyone with a cavity, a chipped tooth or an old filling that has cracked or leaked. Many patients come to us after years away from the dentist or when moving from NHS care, and we assess the decay without comment on the past. We start with one of our dental examinations to measure the damage, which tells us whether a filling is the answer or the tooth needs more extensive work, up to and including replacement with dentures where several teeth are lost.
The material we use, and the fee, depend on the size and position of the cavity, and we explain the choice at the visit.
We assess how deep the decay goes. If the nerve is infected the tooth needs dental abscess treatment rather than a simple filling, and we tell you so before starting.
We numb the tooth with local anaesthetic and remove the decayed tissue, leaving clean, sound enamel and dentine. If we find the decay is deeper than the x-ray suggested, we explain what that changes before continuing.
The composite is placed in layers, shaped to the tooth's original contour and hardened with a curing light. The shade is matched to your tooth.
We smooth the edges so that floss passes cleanly and food does not trap, then check your bite so the filling sits at the right height. A high filling is the commonest cause of discomfort afterwards, so this check matters.
Regular professional teeth cleaning keeps the margins of the filling free of plaque, and we check every filling at each examination.
