How long a crown lasts depends on the material, the health of the tooth beneath it and your home care. A consultation with Dr Ope Sodeinde assesses these before we recommend a crown.
A cracked tooth or a large old filling is a weak point. Sensitivity to cold, a chip you can feel with your tongue, or pain on biting are the usual signs. Left alone, a crack can spread into the root and the tooth is lost. Crowns are part of the general and family dentistry in London we provide to stop that happening.
We take a medical history and use x-rays where they are needed to check the root and the bone around it, keeping radiation exposure to a minimum. From that, Dr Sodeinde and the team decide whether the tooth can be crowned and what needs to happen first.
A crown fails early when the tooth beneath it is not sound or the fit is poor. We start with one of our dental examinations to confirm the tooth and gum are healthy enough to support a crown, and you receive an itemised quote before any work begins.
If a crown is not the right answer, we say so. Where several teeth are missing, we may recommend dentures instead. The recommendation follows the clinical need, not the fee.

A crown is the usual choice for a tooth that is too decayed or too cracked for a filling, for a tooth after root canal treatment or dental abscess treatment, and for a tooth that is badly worn. Healthy gums make a better-fitting crown, so we often recommend professional teeth cleaning first.
We see many patients who are moving from NHS care or who are nervous about the dentist, and we assess the tooth without comment on the past. The material and fit are decided at the consultation.
We take dental x-rays to check the root and explain the material and fit we recommend. If you have jaw joint symptoms, we assess them now, since our TMJ and jaw pain treatment may need to come first so the new crown does not interfere with your bite.
Under local anaesthetic we reduce the tooth by the thickness of the crown so the finished restoration sits flush with the gum line.
We scan the prepared tooth and the teeth around it. The scan is used to design a crown that matches your bite, with margins that fit closely to keep plaque out.
Where the crown is made in a laboratory, a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime and lets you eat normally. For suitable cases, the CEREC crown is milled in the practice and fitted the same day.
We check the fit, the contact with the neighbouring teeth and the bite, then bond the crown permanently.
