The Wand is a computer-controlled way of giving local anaesthetic. It delivers the anaesthetic slowly and steadily through a small handpiece that does not look like a syringe, which makes numbing easier for many children. We use it in the practice at Primrose Hill.
Our dentists assess whether The Wand is the right option for your child at the first appointment.

For many children the injection is the worst part of the dentist, and for some it is the reason treatment never happens. Our paediatric dentistry in London is planned around that, from fluoride treatments and dental hygiene for children and teens that reduce the need for injections in the first place, to gentler ways of numbing when they are needed.
We use dental x-rays to diagnose accurately, so any treatment under numbing, whether a filling or a paediatric crown, is planned before the visit.

Much of the discomfort of an injection comes from the anaesthetic going in too fast. The Wand controls the flow rate by computer, so the anaesthetic goes in slowly and the pressure is low. Children's care is provided by our dentists, with the practice led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071).
For children who need more than a gentler injection we offer nitrous oxide for mild anxiety in the practice, and we can discuss IV sedation for longer treatments or general anaesthesia for extensive treatment, the latter by referral to a hospital anaesthetic team. A consultation decides the right option and gives you an itemised cost breakdown.

Leave your number and we will call you back. Nothing is booked until you say so.
Children who are frightened of needles, children who find the pressure of a standard injection uncomfortable, and parents who dread the moment the syringe appears. The Wand helps keep distress low and can be used with most of our children's dental treatments that need numbing. Our dentists assess each child to confirm it is the right choice.

We assess your child and decide whether The Wand suits their treatment, alongside our care for anxious children approach so they feel safe before we start.
The computer delivers the local anaesthetic at a slow, constant rate through a pen-like handpiece. The low pressure is what reduces the sting of a conventional injection.
We often apply numbing gel first, and we keep talking to your child throughout so they know what is happening.
Once the area is numb we carry out the planned work. The controlled delivery also places the anaesthetic accurately, so the numbing is where it needs to be.
The numbness wears off over the following hours. We tell you what to expect, including keeping your child from biting the numb lip or cheek, and we are available if you have questions.
Our preventive services for children include children's dental exams and cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental hygiene for children and teens.
Our clinical team repairs damaged teeth with dental bonding and tooth-coloured composite resin, uses a diode laser for tongue-tie division, and offers removable aligners where alignment treatment is appropriate.

We confirm the cost at the initial consultation, once we know what treatment your child needs.
The slow delivery takes a little longer than a conventional injection, and we go at your child's pace. We explain the timing at the consultation.
It is designed to reduce the discomfort of a conventional injection, and it is a useful option for children with dental anxiety. Most children notice the numbing gel more than the injection.
That depends on the anaesthetic used, not on The Wand. Our dentists explain the expected timing at your appointment.
Our dentists use The Wand to help children get through treatment calmly. Read what happens at your child's dental consultation and how to book to find out whether it is the right option for your child.

Our dentists assess each child to decide the right level of support. For children who need more than a gentler injection, we provide nitrous oxide in the practice, and we can discuss IV sedation for longer treatments or general anaesthesia by hospital referral.
After the assessment you receive a written plan and itemised quote for your child, which is yours to keep. Arrange your assessment with the clinical team, and discuss payment options with our staff.
