Children's Dental Aftercare Guide in London

This guide covers what to do at home after your child's dental visit or treatment: brushing, eating, what is normal, and when to call us. We go through the relevant parts with you at every appointment.

Our dentists provide this support at our Primrose Hill practice.

How we protect your child from tooth decay

Most of what keeps a child's teeth healthy happens at home between visits. Decay that is missed can turn into dental infection and spread to neighbouring teeth, so our paediatric dentistry in London pairs treatment in the chair with clear instructions for home. Where a tooth is badly broken down we protect it with a paediatric crown; where we need to see between teeth, we use dental x-rays.

Gum health depends on keeping plaque off, which is what dental hygiene for children and teens and good home brushing do together. For molars with deep grooves, dental sealants reduce the risk of decay.

Aftercare that matches the treatment

Aftercare is specific. What you do after a filling is different from what you do after a tongue-tie release or a fluoride application, so we give you instructions for the treatment your child actually had.

Costs are itemised before any treatment is agreed, so you know at the consultation what each step involves and why.

Our dentists also provide early orthodontic treatment and dental hygiene for children and teens at our Primrose Hill practice, each with its own aftercare.

Who can use this aftercare guide

Any parent whose child has had treatment with us, and any parent who wants to get the home routine right. Guilt about a child's dental problems is common and unhelpful; we focus on what to do next. Whether you are moving from NHS to private care or managing a child's first visit, we provide care for anxious children to reduce distress during and after visits, and fluoride treatments to prevent the next cavity. A clinical assessment sets the specific aftercare for your child.

Clinical Assessment of Needs

We assess what your child needs and explain it to both of you. For children with disabilities we provide special needs dentistry, with aftercare adapted to what is manageable at home.

Preventive Protection Steps

We may apply fissure sealants to protect the grooves of molars. After sealants or fluoride, we tell you what to avoid for the rest of the day.

Managing Treatment Comfort

If a procedure is needed we use local anaesthetic. Afterwards, the lip and cheek stay numb for a while, so keep your child from chewing or biting the area until feeling returns. We tell you what is normal and what is not.

Ongoing Home Care Habits

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, supervise brushing for younger children, and keep sugary food and drink to mealtimes. Small changes in diet prevent most childhood decay.

Regular Review Appointments

Routine check-ups let us monitor growth and catch problems while they are small. We agree the recall interval based on your child's risk.

Children's care at the practice

Our clinical team provides children's dental exams and cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental hygiene for children and teens.

Where a tooth needs repair we use tooth-coloured composite resin. We use a diode laser for tongue-tie division and offer removable aligners where alignment treatment is appropriate. We also give families nutrition advice, because diet drives most childhood decay.

Our approach to paediatric care

We keep visits calm and unhurried and give honest options without pressure, so that children's dental exams and cleanings become routine rather than something to dread.

Common aftercare questions

How much will follow-up care cost?

Aftercare advice is part of the treatment. Any further treatment is itemised; see paediatric dentistry costs in London. A consultation gives you an accurate price for your child's care.

How often should my child come back?

It varies. We recommend a recall interval based on your child's decay risk and how well home care is going.

What if my child is sore after treatment?

Mild discomfort after a filling or an extraction is normal for a day or two. If pain is severe, getting worse, or there is swelling, call us on 020 7589 7792.

How long do the results last?

That depends mostly on home care. Regular brushing, a sensible diet and routine check-ups are what make treatment last.
