Laser dentistry in London

Laser dentistry uses a focused beam of light in place of a scalpel or drill for certain procedures, most often on the gums and other soft tissue. We use it where it offers a clinical advantage at our Primrose Hill practice.

Led by Dr Ope Sodeinde.

Where a laser helps

Lasers are used in dentistry to remove or reshape gum tissue, to clean infected gum pockets and to treat small soft-tissue lesions. The beam seals small blood vessels as it cuts, so there is usually less bleeding and no stitches. Laser treatment sits alongside the rest of the general and family dentistry in London we provide, and it is chosen for a procedure only where it does the job better than conventional instruments.

As with any procedure, we take a medical history first and follow the infection control standards of a CQC-registered practice.

Planning laser treatment

You receive an itemised quote after the examination and before treatment starts.

Dr Sodeinde, as a periodontist, assesses whether a laser is the right instrument for your gum condition or whether conventional treatment will serve better. Laser treatment is also planned around your other care, from dentures to the advice in our general dentistry aftercare guide.

Who can benefit from laser treatment

Patients needing gum treatment or minor soft-tissue surgery, and patients who find the noise and vibration of conventional instruments distressing. It can form part of dental abscess treatment where the gum is involved, and the need for it is identified during dental examinations.

Suitability depends on the condition being treated. We explain the costs and timeline at the consultation so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

How laser treatment works

Assessment

We examine the teeth and gums, identify the area to be treated and explain the expected timeline and any risks.

Treatment

The laser is applied to the target tissue only. Local anaesthetic is used where the procedure calls for it.

Healing

Healing starts straight away. We give you written instructions for looking after the area, and most patients find the recovery short.

Review

A follow-up confirms the tissue has healed as intended. We often pair it with professional teeth cleaning to keep the gums healthy.

Long-term gum health

Regular check-ups protect the result. If jaw pain is part of the picture, our TMJ and jaw pain treatment is available at the same practice.

Clinical standards

Our clinical lead is Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Laser treatment of the gums is a periodontal procedure, so it is planned by the specialist who treats gum disease.

Common questions about laser treatment

How much does laser dentistry cost?

The fee depends on the procedure. We give you a full breakdown at your clinical assessment.

How long does it take?

That depends on the size of the area treated. Your clinician gives you a timeframe after examining the teeth and gums.

Is laser dentistry painful?

Many patients find laser procedures more comfortable than conventional surgery, and local anaesthetic is used where needed.

How long do the results last?

That depends on the condition treated and on your home care, and we explain it at the consultation. If snoring or disturbed sleep is a concern, we also provide sleep apnoea devices.

Related care

Laser treatment is often one part of a wider plan. Abscess treatment, jaw joint treatment, sleep apnoea devices and dentures are all provided at the practice, and the aftercare guide covers recovery after each.

You receive a written plan and an itemised quote at your visit. It is yours to keep and use at any other practice. You can arrange your assessment with Dr Sodeinde to find out whether this treatment is right for you.
