Gum abscess drainage in London

Gum abscess drainage releases the infected fluid trapped in a periodontal pocket, which is what relieves the swelling and pain. We find the source of the infection at your consultation and tell you what recovery will involve.

Managing gum infections and abscesses

A gum abscess usually announces itself as a persistent ache or a swelling that makes eating uncomfortable, often on gums that already bleed or have receded. We provide periodontics in London for these infections. The first job is a precise diagnosis of what is causing the swelling, because an abscess from a deep pocket, a foreign body or a cracked tooth each needs a different response. Dr Ope Sodeinde uses non-surgical periodontal therapy as the first line, removing the tartar below the gum line that harbours the bacteria.

Saving your natural teeth

An untreated abscess destroys bone quickly and raises the risk of losing the tooth. We work diagnosis first: you receive the treatment the infection needs, with the pricing set out before any of it starts.

We give you a breakdown of gum disease treatment costs in London before you commit. Where the infection has damaged supporting bone, we may discuss guided tissue regeneration. Dr Ope Sodeinde assesses each case to decide how best to clear the infection and stabilise the tooth.

Who can benefit from drainage

We treat patients with the acute pain and swelling of a gum abscess. Many are embarrassed by the state of their mouth by the time they arrive; that is not something we judge. Prompt treatment matters, because the infection can spread and the bone loss is permanent.

Dr Ope Sodeinde, our GDC-registered specialist periodontist, establishes whether the abscess is an isolated event or a sign of wider disease. That may lead to gingivitis treatment for inflammation elsewhere, or peri-implantitis treatment if the infection is around an implant. If fear of the dentist has kept you away, tell us and we will plan around it.

Resolving your gum infection

Abscess clinical assessment

We examine the site, probe the pocket and take an x-ray if needed to find the cause. You leave with a clear plan and an understanding of what is proposed.

Draining the infection

Under local anaesthetic at our Primrose Hill practice, we open the pocket or make a small incision to release the pus and relieve the pressure, then irrigate the area.

Addressing the root cause

Drainage treats the symptom. To stop it returning we remove what caused it, which may mean scaling and root planing to clear deep bacteria, or in some cases gum grafting for recession to protect the area.

Post-drainage recovery

Healing begins straight away. We give you instructions for keeping the site clean while the tissue repairs and the inflammation settles.

Long-term gum health

A maintenance programme with regular reviews is what stops the infection recurring and protects the supporting bone.

Specialist periodontal care in Primrose Hill for gum abscess drainage

Your assessment is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071), who examines your gums and reviews your medical history before treating. Alongside drainage, the practice provides subgingival cleaning and root debridement, laser gum therapy, scaling and root planing, gingivitis treatment and crown lengthening.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled to check healing, and gum irrigation can reduce inflammation between visits.

Resolving gum infections

We focus on the clinical outcome of your treatment. Consultations are calm and unhurried, with honest options and no pressure. Where an infection has caused deep damage, we can also provide pocket reduction surgery to protect the tooth.

London Dental Specialists helped me with my gum problems and I now consider the issue resolved - previously I had tried all sorts of things on my own but I needed Ope and team's professional help and expertise.

Common concerns about abscess relief

How much does gum abscess drainage cost?

We set the cost at your initial clinical assessment, once the cause of the infection and the treatment it needs are known.

How long does gum abscess drainage take?

It depends on the size and location of the abscess. We give you a timeframe once we have examined the area.

Is gum abscess drainage painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic first. Most patients feel relief once the pressure is released.

How long does gum abscess drainage last?

Drainage removes the immediate infection; whether it stays away depends on treating the underlying cause. We may recommend a maintenance programme or laser gum therapy to keep the disease from returning.

How we manage your infection

We assess the cause and depth of the infection at your first visit, and Dr Ope Sodeinde sets out how to clear the abscess and protect the surrounding tissue. You can learn what happens at your first periodontal consultation and how to book.
