Self-Ligating Braces in London

Self-ligating braces are fixed braces whose brackets hold the archwire with a built-in clip or door instead of elastic ties. The wire can slide more freely, and there are no ties to replace at each visit.

Treatment is led by Dr Kia Papagalani, specialist orthodontist (GDC No. 228487).

Fixed braces with less friction

With conventional braces, the elastic ties that hold the wire add friction and collect plaque, and they have to be changed at every adjustment. Self-ligating brackets remove the ties. If you are comparing orthodontics in London and know you need a fixed appliance, this is one of the systems Dr Papagalani will assess you for. Metal and clear bracket versions are available.

Specialist planning for your alignment

We plan diagnosis first, so the clinical strategy matches your anatomy before any bracket is fitted, and the fee is itemised at the consultation.

You can compare this system with fixed metal braces, and see fees for every system on our orthodontics costs in London page.

Who self-ligating braces suit

Patients who need a fixed appliance and want fewer, shorter adjustment visits. For a less visible fixed option we also provide clear ceramic braces. The specialist orthodontist confirms suitability at your consultation, and once treatment is complete our orthodontic aftercare guide explains how to keep the result. If dental visits make you anxious, tell us when you book.

Your path to straighter teeth

Orthodontic assessment

We examine your teeth and bite, discuss your goals and flag any complications. If you would prefer a hidden or removable option, we can discuss lingual braces or Invisalign Full at the same visit.

Fitting the bracket system

We bond the brackets and thread the archwire through the clips. Without ties, adjustment visits are shorter and often fewer.

Active tooth movement

The brackets apply steady pressure and we review progress at regular appointments.

Final alignment checks

As the teeth reach their target positions we make the last wire adjustments and check the bite meets correctly.

Removing the braces

Once the movement is complete we remove the brackets and set out your retention plan. Payment plans to spread the cost are discussed at the start, not the end.

How we plan the movement

We plan with 3D imaging, which lets us show you a preview of the planned movement before treatment begins. Treatment is led by Dr Kia Papagalani, specialist orthodontist.

Self-ligating braces are one of several systems here. For removable treatment we provide the Invisalign range: Invisalign Express for minor corrections and slight relapse, plus Invisalign Full, Invisalign Lite, Teen and First.

Patient evidence

What patients tell us matters

Patients tell us they value a calm, unhurried manner, honest options and a consultation with no pressure to proceed. Once your teeth are aligned, orthodontic retainers hold the result.

Common questions about self-ligating braces

What are self-ligating braces?

Fixed braces whose brackets hold the wire with a built-in mechanism rather than elastic ties. The best-known example is described on our Damon braces page.

How much do they cost?

The fee depends on your case and is itemised at your consultation.

How long does treatment take?

It depends on your alignment. The clinician sets your timeline at the initial appointment.

Which braces do you use?

Damon brackets. The specialist orthodontist confirms at your assessment whether this system is the right choice for your teeth.

Comparing orthodontic options in London
