Orthodontic Retainers in London

Orthodontic retainers are custom-made appliances, fixed or removable, that hold teeth in position after braces or aligners. Without them, teeth drift back.

It depends on the type, the material and how it is looked after. Dr Kia Papagalani, specialist orthodontist (GDC No. 228487), assesses which type suits you. Fixed and removable retainers both carry a 12-month warranty.

Why teeth move after treatment

Teeth are held by ligaments and bone that keep remodelling for years after treatment, so a straightened tooth will drift unless it is held. If you have noticed movement after earlier braces, or have just finished treatment elsewhere, our orthodontics in London includes fitting and replacing retainers for patients we did not treat.

Specialist planning for lasting results

The wrong retainer, or one that does not fit, lets teeth shift back. We match the appliance to your case, whether you finished with clear ceramic braces or any other method, and itemise the fee at the consultation. Day-to-day care of the retainer is covered in our orthodontic aftercare guide.

Who needs a retainer

Everyone who has finished orthodontic treatment, including patients who completed lingual braces or Invisalign Full, and anyone whose old retainer has broken or stopped fitting. If visibility matters, we discuss the least noticeable option. Dr Papagalani sets the type and wear schedule for your teeth.

Securing your orthodontic results

Retainer suitability assessment

We examine your teeth and decide between fixed and removable, reviewing your previous treatment, such as Damon braces or Invisalign Lite, so the retainer gives the stability your case needs.

Impressions or scan

We record your teeth precisely. A poorly fitted retainer irritates the mouth or fails to hold the teeth, so accuracy here matters.

Fitting the retainer

We fit and check the retainer. A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth; a removable one is a clear tray or a wire-and-acrylic plate. We show you how to wear and clean it.

Monitoring stability

Reviews let us catch small shifts early. We tell you how often to come back.

Long-term care

We explain the signs of wear or damage. If a retainer breaks, loosens or stops fitting, contact us promptly; a quick replacement stops the teeth drifting.

How we plan retention

We plan with 3D imaging, so the retainer is made to the final tooth positions. Your care is led by Dr Kia Papagalani, specialist orthodontist.

Retention is the final stage of every course we provide, from Invisalign Full, Lite, Teen, First and Invisalign Express to fixed braces.

Common questions about retainers

What is a retainer?

An appliance that keeps teeth in their new positions after treatment, whether that was self-ligating braces, aligners or any other system.

How much do they cost?

It depends on the type. The fee is itemised at your consultation once we have decided which appliance suits you.

How long do they last?

It depends on the material and how consistently it is worn and cleaned. We give you a replacement schedule at your review. Both fixed and removable retainers carry a 12-month warranty.

Which retainers do you use?

Fixed bonded wires and removable retainers. The specialist orthodontist chooses based on your teeth and how likely you are to wear a removable one.

Patient evidence

Secure your alignment results

We decide the right retainer for you at an orthodontic consultation, where Dr Papagalani checks your teeth and the fit. If you are comparing practices, we can explain how the different retainer types hold a result.

Or call us on 020 7589 7792.

Further orthodontic guidance

The consultation settles which retainer you need and how long it should last, and covers fees and aftercare.

You leave with a written plan and an itemised quote, yours to keep and use at any other practice. You can arrange your assessment with your specialist orthodontist to find the right retainer for your teeth.
