Managing anxiety during root canal treatment

Root canal is put off more than almost any other treatment because of what people expect it to feel like. In practice the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic; what sedation adds is calm for the length of the appointment. Our sedation dentistry in London options cover IV sedation and oral sedation in the practice, nitrous oxide for children, and general anaesthesia through a hospital pathway.

Specialist planning for nervous patients

Dr Sodeinde assesses your needs so the level of sedation matches the treatment, and we quote only for what your case requires, itemised before any work begins. Root canal treatment at the practice is the field of Dr Neha Patel, specialist in endodontics (GDC No. 150517).

If the root canal is part of wider work, see sedation for full-mouth treatment. For younger patients we provide nitrous oxide sedation for children at our Primrose Hill practice.

Who sedation for root canal suits

We provide intravenous sedation for patients who feel overwhelmed by the thought of the treatment or fear losing control during it. You stay conscious but deeply relaxed. Where one method is not enough, we discuss combination sedation. A responsible adult must escort you home. Fees are on our sedation dentistry costs in London page. We review your medical history at the consultation to confirm the right choice for you.

What happens on the day

Assessment

We discuss your medical history and anxiety level and confirm that conscious sedation is right for you. The consultation also settles the timing and cost.

Preparation

The clinician administers the sedation in a controlled dose. It suits patients with a sensitive gag reflex and anyone who finds a long appointment daunting.

The root canal

With the sedation working and the tooth numbed, the root canal is carried out while you are calm. If you also need an extraction, see sedation for wisdom teeth removal.

Recovery

We monitor you until the sedation has worn off. Our sedation aftercare guide covers the hours after you get home.

Review

Once you have recovered, we review the treated tooth. Leaving a root canal until the tooth is in constant pain makes the treatment harder, so early assessment is the better route.

Clinical safety and sedation protocols for root canal

Every case begins with a complete consultation, a pre-assessment and a medical history review. The practice is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Sedation is administered by appropriately trained clinicians, and we monitor you throughout the appointment and during recovery.

You must arrange for someone to accompany you home, and you must not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after sedation.

Saving teeth with specialist care

We work at an unhurried pace, explain the options honestly, and do not pressure anyone into treatment. Patients with gum disease alongside the tooth can read about sedation for gum surgery.

This required root canal treatment (completed by Dr Neha Patel) and then the fitting of a crown, after complex work to reshape the tooth (completed by Dr Ope Sodeinde).

Rather than the extraction, they carefully operated a root canal.

Common concerns about sedated root canal

How much does sedation for root canal cost?

We confirm the sedation fee at your consultation and itemise it alongside the specialist root canal treatment itself.

How long does it take?

It depends on the tooth and the number of canals. We give you a timeframe at your assessment.

Is it painful?

Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth. The sedation keeps you deeply relaxed while still able to respond.

How long do the effects last?

The sedation wears off after the appointment and has no bearing on how the tooth heals. For implant patients, we provide the same support with sedation for implant surgery.

Arrange your clinical assessment

We confirm the sedation and the requirements of your root canal at a consultation. Read what happens at your sedation consultation and how to book.
