This sedation aftercare guide explains what happens after a sedated appointment: how long the effects last, who needs to be with you, and what you must avoid. Knowing the plan for after you leave the chair is part of what makes sedation feel safe.
We tell you how long the effects of your sedation will last and what to expect in the first 24 hours. Your own recovery needs are assessed at your consultation with Dr Ope Sodeinde.

The sedative does not stop working when the treatment ends. For the rest of the day your coordination and judgement are affected, which is why every method in our sedation dentistry in London range comes with the same instructions for getting home and the hours that follow.

Recovery differs by method. Nitrous oxide clears in minutes; oral sedation and IV sedation leave you drowsy for some hours. We give you instructions specific to the method and the treatment, whether that is sedation for root canal or something longer. Dr Sodeinde oversees the clinical standards of the practice.

Leave your number and we will call you back. Nothing is booked until you say so.
Every adult who has had sedation, from sedation for gum surgery in the practice to general anaesthesia in hospital. You will not be sent home alone: a responsible adult must act as your escort and stay with you while you recover.

At your consultation we confirm the method, arrange your escort, and tell you what to expect afterwards so nothing on the day is a surprise.
You stay in the practice until the sedative has worn off enough for you to leave safely. Children who have had nitrous oxide sedation for children are usually alert within minutes; adults after IV sedation rest for longer.
Your escort takes you home. You must not drive, cycle or use public transport alone. This applies after every method, including sedation for full-mouth treatment.
Do not drive, operate machinery, or sign anything important for 24 hours. Rest, and follow the written instructions for the treatment you had.
We check how your recovery is going and answer any questions. If anything concerns you after you get home, contact the practice.
Every case begins with a complete consultation, a pre-assessment and a medical history review, and we monitor you throughout the appointment and during recovery at our Primrose Hill practice. The practice is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Sedation is administered by appropriately trained clinicians.
You must arrange for someone to accompany you home, and you must not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after sedation.
