Dental Sealants in London

A dental sealant is a thin resin coating painted into the grooves on the chewing surface of a back tooth. It seals the grooves so food and plaque cannot lodge in them, which is where most decay in molars begins. We assess whether sealants would help you at a consultation at our Primrose Hill practice.

Led by Dr Ope Sodeinde.

Preventing decay in the grooves of back teeth

Molars have deep pits and fissures that are narrower than a toothbrush bristle, so even careful brushing leaves plaque in them. That is why cavities appear in people who brush well. A sealant fills those grooves with a smooth resin layer that plaque cannot get under, and it is one of the preventive treatments in the general and family dentistry in London we provide.

At the consultation we take a medical history and check whether sealants are the right choice for you, or whether a fluoride application to remineralise weakened enamel is more appropriate.

Sealants placed where they are needed

Sealants are recommended tooth by tooth from the examination findings, not applied as a routine package, and the fee is in your itemised quote before treatment.

They protect only the chewing surface. For the smooth surfaces and root surfaces we also provide fluoride treatments. A consultation with Dr Sodeinde or our clinical team confirms what your teeth need.

Who can benefit from sealants

Children and teenagers whose adult molars have recently come through, and adults with deep grooves or a history of decay in the back teeth. If you are unsure where sealants fit, our guide to general dental treatments and which option fits puts them in context. The assessment confirms whether they are right for you and what they cost.

How sealants are applied

Suitability check

We examine the back teeth for deep grooves and confirm there is no decay already in them. Sealing is often done at the same visit as professional teeth cleaning so the surfaces are clean.

Preparing the surface

The tooth is cleaned, conditioned with a mild gel so the resin bonds, and dried. No drilling and no anaesthetic are involved.

Applying the resin

The flowing resin is painted into the fissures, where it runs into the narrowest parts of the groove.

Setting the sealant

A curing light hardens the resin in seconds into a thin, smooth layer.

Checking the bite

We check that the sealant has not left a high spot. You can eat normally straight after the appointment.

Clinical standards

Preventive care at the practice is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Sealants work alongside regular check-ups, cleaning and fluoride; where decay has already formed, the tooth is restored with a dental filling instead.

Questions about sealants

How much do dental sealants cost?

The fee is confirmed at your clinical assessment and included in your itemised quote.

How long do dental sealants last?

Several years in most cases. We check them at each routine examination and repair or replace any that have worn or chipped.

Which sealants do you use?

A resin sealant chosen by the clinician at the appointment to suit the tooth.

Can sealants be placed over decay?

No. A tooth with an established cavity needs a filling. Sealants are for sound teeth, to keep them that way.

Protect your back teeth

We assess whether sealants suit you at a new patient consultation, and you can read how to book. The examination identifies which teeth would benefit.

Other preventive care

Fluoride treatments protect the surfaces that sealants do not, and regular cleaning removes the plaque that causes decay.

You will receive a written plan and an itemised quote from Dr Sodeinde, which is yours to keep and use at any other practice. Arrange your assessment with Dr Sodeinde to discuss your options and payment particulars with our staff.
