Contributions and Awards:
- Discovered the role of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in aggressive periodontitis
- Developed tryptic soy-serum-bacitracin-vancomycin (TSBV) agar plate medium to select for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
- Substantiated aggressive periodontitis as an infection, rather than a degenerative disorder
- Received the 1990 William J. Gies Award by the American Academy of Periodontology
- Received a 1995 award from the California Society of Periodontists for outstanding contribution to the specialty
- Awarded for outstanding contribution to the field of periodontology
- Honored at the 2013 American Academy of Periodontology annual meeting for contributions to the field

- Advocates the use of diluted bleach as a mouth rinse and subgingival irrigant for periodontal diseases
- Known for advocating the use of diluted bleach as an adjunctive treatment for periodontal diseases
- Reviewed the literature on diluted bleach rinsing in a June 2015 article

- Co-authored the textbook 'Contemporary Oral Microbiology and Immunology' in 1992
