Education and Career
- Raymond Begg was born in Coolgardie, Australia.
- He attended Pulteney Grammar School and St. Peters College in Adelaide.
- In 1923, he received a science degree from the University of Melbourne.
- In 1924, he enrolled in the Angle School of Orthodontia in Pasadena, California.
- He returned to Australia in 1925 and worked as a professor at the University of Adelaide.
Begg Technique
- The Begg technique consists of three stages: opening anterior bite, closing anterior spaces, and root correction.
- It involves the use of bite opening bends and class II elastics.
- The technique was introduced to the United States by Harold Kesling and George Dishham.
- Dr. Kesling popularised the technique in the United States.
- In 1959, the results of the Begg technique were assessed by over 150 orthodontists.
Death and Legacy
- Raymond Begg retired in 1980.
- He died on January 18, 1983, in Glen Osmond.
- He was cremated.
- He is survived by his youngest daughter, Diana Coates.
- In 1981, he became an Officer of the Order of Australia.
- He was the first Australian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
- He was a founding member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists in 1927.
- In 1977, he received the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award.
- He was a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons.
