Specialist Bone Grafting in London

Bone grafting rebuilds jawbone that has been lost, either to give a dental implant enough bone to sit in or to shore up the support around an existing tooth. Graft material is placed into the defect and, over the following months, your own bone grows through it. We assess the graft type your case needs, and the healing time, at a consultation.

Led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist.

Addressing gum bone loss

Bone is lost to two things: periodontal disease, and the shrinkage that follows a tooth being removed. Receding gums are often the first visible sign. Our periodontics in London treats the disease first, with scaling and root planing to remove tartar below the gum line and laser gum therapy (LANAP) to target the bacteria, and only then rebuilds what has gone. Dr Ope Sodeinde confirms at diagnosis whether grafting is needed.

Preserving your natural teeth with bone grafting

Where support is failing, restoring the bone is what keeps a tooth or makes an implant possible. A periodontist measures the bone loss at a diagnosis-first consultation, so you have the procedure your case needs and pay only for that.

Bone grafting sits alongside related procedures: ridge augmentation to rebuild jaw width and height, a sinus lift for the upper back jaw, the pinhole surgical technique for recession, and soft tissue grafts to protect roots. Dr Ope Sodeinde decides which applies at your first visit.

Bone grafting: who can benefit from this procedure

Patients with bone loss in the jaw, whether from gum disease that has loosened teeth or from gaps where teeth have already gone. Acting early keeps more of your own bone. If dental visits feel daunting, the consultation is calm and unhurried.

Whether you are preparing for an implant or treating active disease, we help you see which of the gum disease treatments: which one fits, and Dr Ope Sodeinde confirms your suitability at the clinical consultation.

Your bone grafting process

Surgical site preparation

Under local anaesthetic, the gum is lifted and the area of bone loss is cleaned so the site is ready for the graft material.

Graft material placement

The graft is packed into the deficient area to give new bone a scaffold to grow through. Where needed, we use guided tissue regeneration to protect the graft with a membrane while it matures.

Surgical site closure

The gum is repositioned over the graft and sutured. If gum surgery worries you, tell us; sedation options are discussed beforehand.

Bone integration period

Over the following months your own bone grows into the graft. We give you a timeline for this period so you know what to expect.

Post-surgical review for bone grafting

We check the site to confirm the bone is forming as planned, and a maintenance programme protects the result and the gums around it.

Bone grafting: specialist periodontal care in Primrose Hill

Your treatment is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071), who examines your gums and reviews your medical history to confirm whether grafting or another procedure suits you. Before any graft, subgingival cleaning and root debridement make sure the supporting tissues are free of infection.

Supporting treatments include laser gum therapy, scaling and root planing, gingivitis treatment and gum abscess drainage. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to check the gum tissue is healing.

Our approach to patient care

The prospect of surgery is daunting, and many patients arrive anxious about the process or the cost. Consultations at our Primrose Hill practice are calm and unhurried, with honest options before you decide.

Ope and his team are always very professional and reassuring.
