Oral Sedation for Nervous Patients in London

Oral sedation is a prescribed tablet taken before your appointment to reduce anxiety. There is no cannula, you stay awake and able to respond, and the appointment feels far more manageable. We use it at our Primrose Hill practice for patients with moderate dental anxiety. A consultation with Dr Ope Sodeinde confirms whether it is the right option for you.

How long the tablet takes to work, and how long your visit will be, are worked out at that first appointment.

Managing dental anxiety

Postponing care because you expect discomfort is common, and waiting until you are in pain usually makes the treatment more involved. Oral sedation is the lightest form of sedation dentistry in London we offer to adults.

Specialist planning for your comfort

The choice of sedation is a clinical decision, matched to your anxiety level and medical history. If the work is extensive, sedation for full-mouth treatment may be a better fit; for younger patients we provide nitrous oxide sedation for children.

We start with a diagnosis, so the itemised quote reflects only what you need. Dr Sodeinde oversees the plan.

Who oral sedation suits

Oral sedation suits patients with moderate nervousness or a strong gag reflex who would rather avoid a cannula. Because you remain conscious, you keep a sense of control throughout the visit. A responsible adult must take you home and stay with you until the effects have worn off.

We confirm suitability at an examination. Fees are on our sedation dentistry costs in London page. If a tablet alone is unlikely to be enough, we can discuss combination sedation.

What happens on the day

Assessment

We review your medical history and how anxious you feel, and confirm that oral sedation is safe for you.

Taking the tablet

You take the prescribed tablet at the time we set, usually before you arrive, so it has taken effect when treatment starts. You feel calm and drowsy but stay awake.

Treatment

We carry out the dental work while you are relaxed, with local anaesthetic for the treatment itself. Oral sedation is often used for sedation for wisdom teeth removal. We monitor you throughout.

Recovery

Your companion takes you home. Our sedation aftercare guide covers the hours after your visit.

Clinical safety and sedation protocols for oral sedation

Every case begins with a complete consultation, a pre-assessment and a medical history review. The practice is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071). Sedation is administered by appropriately trained clinicians, and we monitor you throughout the appointment.

Because sedation affects your coordination, you must arrange for someone to accompany you home and must not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours afterwards. This applies to every form of sedation we provide.

Patient experiences in Primrose Hill

We work at an unhurried pace, explain the options honestly, and do not pressure anyone into treatment. For patients who cannot be treated under conscious sedation, we arrange general anaesthesia through a hospital pathway.

Common concerns about oral sedation

How much does oral sedation cost?

We confirm the fee at your consultation, once we know what treatment is involved, and give you an itemised quote.

How long does the tablet take to work?

We tell you when to take it so that it has taken effect by the time treatment begins, and we check you are relaxed before starting.

How long does the appointment take?

It depends on the treatment. The effects of the tablet last beyond the appointment, which is why an escort is required.

Is oral sedation painful?

No. It is a tablet. If you need deeper relaxation, IV sedation is the next step.

Your sedation suitability assessment

We confirm whether oral sedation is right for you at a consultation that covers your medical history and anxiety levels. Read what happens at your sedation consultation and how to book.
