History and Recognition

- Established as the American Board of Orthodontia in 1929
- Name changed to the American Board of Orthodontics in 1938
- Albert Ketcham Award established in 1935 for recognition in Orthodontics
- American Dental Association recognised ABO as the official certifying agency in 1950
- Charles H. Tweed was the first certified orthodontist in the US

Certification Process

- Graduates required to present 15 cases and a thesis for board certification
- Written examination implemented in 1964
- Thesis requirement discontinued in 1978
- New Examination Center opened in St. Louis in 2011 for clinical examinations
- Certification process ensures competence and expertise in orthodontics
