Timeline of Permanent Teeth
- The first permanent tooth appears at around 5-6 years of age.
- The mouth goes through a transition period with both primary and permanent teeth during the mixed dentition period.
- The first permanent molars erupt behind the last milk molars of the primary dentition.
- Up to 28 out of 32 permanent teeth appear by the age of thirteen.
- The full permanent dentition is completed during the permanent dentition period.
Pathology of Permanent Teeth
- Hyperdontia, or having extra teeth, is possible.
- Hyperdontia is often associated with syndromes such as cleft lip and palate.
- Supernumerary teeth may erupt into the mouth or remain impacted in the bone.
- Hyperdontia is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a third set of teeth.
- Syndromes like cleidocranial dysplasia and Gardner's syndrome can also be associated with hyperdontia.
