Root canal treatments in London

Root canal treatments differ according to the tooth involved, how far the infection has spread, and whether the tooth has been treated before. This page sets out the options so you can see where your case is likely to sit. Dr Neha Patel, specialist in endodontics, assesses the tooth and confirms which route is appropriate.

Endodontic options to save your natural teeth

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, removes infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth, disinfects the canals and seals them. It stops the infection spreading and avoids extraction, so you keep your own tooth.

We provide a range of endodontic treatments for different clinical situations. Where a previous procedure has failed, we carry out root canal retreatment. Some persistent infections at the root tip need a surgical approach, which we manage through an apicoectomy. We also provide cracked tooth treatment and care for dental trauma, including luxation.

Where the root anatomy is complex, we use CBCT 3D imaging to map the canals before treatment so Dr Patel can plan the procedure accurately.

Many patients worry about the time involved. Root canal treatment traditionally needed several appointments; for suitable teeth we can complete the treatment and seal the canals in a single visit.

Endodontic treatment questions

What types of root canal treatment are there?

The three broad groups are first-time root canal therapy, root canal retreatment of a tooth that has been treated before, and microscopic surgery on the root tip. All are carried out by Dr Neha Patel, specialist in endodontics (GDC No. 150517). The practice is led by Dr Ope Sodeinde, GDC-registered specialist periodontist (GDC No. 104071).

Which root canal treatment option is right for me?

That depends on whether the tooth needs a first-time procedure or the removal of a previous root filling that has failed, and on how deep the infection runs. We assess your symptoms and the tooth before recommending a route. For a full breakdown of endodontics costs in London, see our pricing page.

How do I choose between root canal treatment options?

You do not have to choose alone. We recommend the option that best prevents reinfection while keeping as much tooth structure as possible. If treatment through the crown of the tooth is not possible, we may suggest microscopic surgery. The decision is made with you at the clinical assessment.

How much do the different root canal treatment options cost?

Fees depend on the complexity of the canals and what is needed to clear the infection. We give you a written cost breakdown after the initial examination.

What happens at a root canal treatment assessment?

We examine the tooth and take the x-rays needed to see how far the infection has reached along the root, then plan a procedure that removes the infected pulp and stops the pain. You can read what happens at your root canal consultation and how to book.

Can a tooth be saved if the infection is severe?

Often, yes. Saving the natural tooth is our first aim even when the infection is advanced, provided enough sound tooth remains to restore afterwards. If you are unsure whether your tooth can be kept, the assessment will tell you.

Will I need a crown after my root canal?

Usually a back tooth will. Once the nerve is removed the tooth becomes more brittle, and a crown or onlay protects it from fracturing. Front teeth with little structure lost may only need a filling.

Why do some root canal treatments fail?

Canals that were missed or not fully cleaned, a leaking restoration, or resistant bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis can allow infection to persist or return. Root canal retreatment clears the remaining bacteria and re-seals the tooth.

Is root canal treatment painful?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic and its purpose is to remove the source of your pain. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.

What happens if I leave a tooth infection untreated?

Bacteria in the pulp cause pulpitis, which brings severe pain and swelling, and an untreated infection can spread into the bone and cost you the tooth. Rather than wait, find out what happens at your root canal consultation and how to book your visit.

Before any of the above, we need to know whether the pulp is alive. Dr Patel uses pulp vitality tests for nerve health assessment and thermal and electric pulp testing for tooth sensitivity to decide the correct course of action for your tooth.

You leave the assessment with a written plan and an itemised quote that is yours to keep, whichever practice you choose.
